Right to Dream

The program that will bring excitement to all NWT communities this winter and spring! The Right to Dream program will allow all NWT communities to experience the energy of the Vancouver Games. Our goal is to have all northern youth feel inspired by the Olympic spirit in their home communities. The Aboriginal Sport Circle of the NWT (ASC NWT) will achieve this by partnering with communities to support an event that brings excitement and engages youth in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

The Right to Dream is promoting five individual programs that can be facilitated or supported in any NWT community. Below is a brief outline of each program:

Pond Hockey/Fun on Ice: This year’s emphasis is on pond hockey and accident prevention. All participants will receive a helmet and hockey stick.

Dene Games & Arctic Sport: Can be organized as a school or community event.

Mini Olympics/Paralympics: Any Olympic event can be organized with slight modifications.

Archery: An introduction to Archery for all ages.

Hip Hop: An introduction to hip hop and rhythmical music. This can also involve traditional drumming with modern dance.

Communities can also come up with their own community event geared around Olympics and we will support it by offering Authentic Vancouver 2010 Olympic Clothing.

Global Warming and the Permafrost

The Arctic tundra is one of the world’s most extensive ecosystems, and the frozen soil known as permafrost, which underlies it, can be hundreds of metres deep. But as the world warms up in response to the millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases being poured into the atmosphere each year, so does the permafrost. As the permafrost thaws, bacteria start chewing up the organic matter it contains. This releases yet more carbon dioxide, as well as methane, another greenhouse gas, which has 25 times the warming potential of CO2. Edward Schuur of the University of Florida in Gainesville, a doyen of the field, estimates that the world’s permafrost contains twice as much carbon as its atmosphere. If even a fraction of that were released as CO2 and methane, it would be bad news ... read the full article below.
